Obituary for Doris Helen Stoecker (Vincent)

Doris Helen (Vincent) Stoecker, 94, formerly of Salisbury, Connecticut, returned to the Lord on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at her residence in Hedgesville, West Virginia.

Born August 21, 1918 in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Milton Alfred Vincent and Helen Isabella (House) Vincent. She studied at Brooklyn College and Columbia University and had a diverse career, including as a teacher, librarian, and book reviewer. She was an active member of Hedges Chapel.

Doris is revered by her family and friends. A true citizen of the world and all of its religions and people, she lived in various countries and spoke multiple languages. A lifelong reader, she hosted her own program, “Hooked on Books,” for many years on the Washington DC syndicate of National Public Radio; her literary interests ranged from Trollope, to Leo Rosten, to the latest Swedish mystery novel. Her pioneering spirit and sense of adventure transcended her age. She will be remembered for her intelligence, wit, fortitude, guidance, and wisdom. She will be missed.

She is survived by her son, Karl R. Stoecker, of Miami Beach, Florida; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one brother and one sister, Alfred Vincent and Barbara Gray, both of Rochester, New York. She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl A. Stoecker, and son, Richard V. Stoecker.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 14, 2013 at Hedges Chapel with Reverend Jack Vineyard. A luncheon will follow at 11:30 a.m. Internment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, West Virginia 25401, or Hedges Chapel, 668 Mountain Lake Road, Hedgesville, West Virginia 25427.
