Obituary for Rev. William Clyde "Bill" Crowe

Print
Rev. William Clyde “Bill” Crowe, the longtime superintendent of the Martinsburg Union Rescue Mission, entered the presence of his Lord and Savior on Friday, September 28, 2018, at his home in Martinsburg, following a battle with cancer. He was 90 years old.

Born in Hagerstown, Maryland, on March 6, 1928, Bill was the son of Helen Carroll Carter and Charles Clyde Crowe. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and fought in the campaign at the Chosin Reservoir. Problems with alcohol forced him to leave the military and gradually drained his money until, needing a place to stay, he was given a bed at the Hagerstown Rescue Mission.

At the mission, his life changed completely. Bill received Christ as his Savior, and, after a spiritual struggle, gave up alcohol for what would become a lifetime of service. He also met his future wife, Elizabeth “Libby” Miles, who was working in the mission’s children’s ministry. The couple were married on June 1, 1955 and ministered together at the Hagerstown Rescue Mission before working for three years at a rescue mission in Nashville, Tennessee. They returned to the area in 1961 to serve at the newly founded Martinsburg Union Rescue Mission, where Bill became the superintendent. He also assisted area congregations by filling pulpits when a pastor was needed.

In 1990 Bill was asked to serve as interim pastor at Broadfording Church of God in Hagerstown, a position that eventually became permanent. Bill continued to serve at the Mission and at the church until he retired in 2017.

Bill is survived by his wife, Libby; by his three daughters, Debbie, Sharon, and Karen Sue; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Delores Bond; and one brother, Howard Carter, Jr. He was predeceased by his second daughter, Dorcas. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 6 at Independent Bible Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Martinsburg Union Rescue Mission at
P. O. Box 843, Martinsburg, WV 25402.
