Obituary for Helen Virginia Spates (Hardy)

Helen Virginia Spates, 82 of Harpers Ferry passed away Thursday, August 16, 2018 in the Clary Grove Nursing Home. Born July 29, 1936 in Charles Town she was the daughter of the late Clarence Ebey Hardy and Hazel Virginia Penwell Hardy. Helen was a member of the Mannings Assembly of God Church. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her grandchildren were her world. Helen loved cooking, her church, church family and caring for children. She had cared for more than 100 children, many of whom had returned once grown for visits.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Floyd Franklin Spates, Sr., son, Floyd Franklin Spates, Jr. of Harpers Ferry, grandchildren, Angela Ferraiolo and husband Mark of Inwood and Bradley Spates of Kearneysville, great grandchildren, Elliana, Avvie, Maggie and Colter, close friend and daughter in-law, Debera Spates. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by son, Jeffrey Neil Spates, daughter, Pamela Spates Jackson and numerous brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held 12 p.m. Monday, August 20, 2018 at the Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home with the Pastor Steve Lewis officiating. Interment will be in the Pleasant View Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the chapel.
