Obituary for Hayward L. Plotner

Hayward L.   Plotner
Hayward L. Plotner, 88, of Martinsburg, passed away peacefully at his residence, Tuesday, April 17, 2018 with family by his side while under the care of Hospice. He was born May 23, 1929 in Hedgesville, WV, to the late Herman and Lottie Mae (Byers) Plotner.

He was a graduate of Hedgesville High School, class of 1947, and worked for the B&O Railroad from the age of 18 until his retirement as yardmaster at 62. He was proud to have served his country in the United States Navy on the USS Mellette (APA 156), from December 1950 until his honorable discharge as Boatswain’s Mate III, October 1954. He was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council; American Legion, the Loyal Order of Moose, an honorary member of the Martinsburg Civitan Club, and served on the Board of Directors for the Eastern Panhandle Training Center (Grove Center). In his spare time he enjoyed gardening, transporting vehicles for a local dealership, and spending time with his family and friends.

Hayward is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara L. Plotner; two children, daughter, Karen L. Oliver of Martinsburg, and son, Michael L. Plotner of Martinsburg; one brother Donald Plotner of Martinsburg; one grandchild, Lauren E. Castro and her husband John Castro of Tampa, FL; and one great-grandson Benjamin.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Orville, Marshal, Watson, and Victor Plotner; and four sisters, Imagine Rhoe, Madeline Wood, Geraldine "Cricket" Laing, and Dolly “Dot” Orsini.

Family will receive friends on Thursday, April 19, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Friday, April 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor James D. Riley officiating. Military graveside service will be held at Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
