Obituary for John Peter Pacylowski Sr.

John Peter Pacylowski Sr.
John Peter Pacylowski, Sr., an unarmed Army medic in World War II, died peacefully at his home in Falling Waters, WV on Thursday, March 1, 2018. He was 95. He had been in failing health since a stroke in late February.

Born April 8, 1922, John was the son of the late Philip Pacylowsky and Rosalie (Blazkovsky) Pacylowsky.

John served from 1943-1945 in the US Army 90th Infantry Division, Company D, 315th Medical Battalion. He served in the June 6 D-Day invasion on Utah Beach, Normandy, as well as battles in Northern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was in Czechoslovakia when the war in Europe ended.

A few days before he passed away, John was awarded by France the Legion of Honor, France's highest distinction for military merits during WWII.

Prone to humility and reluctant to discuss the war in detail, John emphasized comradery and friendships, sharing chocolates with village children, and focusing on staying alive to return home to his wife, Annie, and young son, Peter.

John is survived by his wife for 76 years, Annie (Gordzica) Pacylowski, 96.

John and Annie had three sons: Peter John Pacylowski, John Peter Pacylowski, Jr., and Edward John Pacylowski. The couple had four daughters: Roseann Pacy, Susan Louise Gawler, Priscilla Ann Armer, and Peggy Ann Oyarzo.

An inscription on the back of a treasured, candid photograph of John reveals his feelings of vulnerability while being away at war: “I love you,” he wrote. “Kisses to Peter. See if he knows me.” This tenderness was always just under the surface of John’s exterior of humor, helpfulness, and hard work.

John's unmatched work ethic and versatility led to a rare opportunity to work alongside his sons at companies they founded: as shop manager at Lifetime Wood Products founded by John Jr., and as a construction site supervisor and consultant with Ed at his company, ProBuilt Construction.

He is remembered for his generous spirit, faith in God, and eternal devotion to the love of his life, Annie, a love that blessed the family with seven children, 23 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren (includes step grandchildren and great-grandchildren), with spouses, as listed below:

John and Annie shared a loving cottage provided by their daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla and Eric Armer, as well as daily care and support by daughters Priscilla, Susan and Peggy.

John was preceded in death by one son, John Peter Pacylowski, Jr., and one grandson, Joseph Carl (Joey) Gross, as well as five siblings: one sister, Anna Louise; and four brothers: Vladimar (Walter, Lottie); Anthony Robert; Frank (Bip); and Edward Frederick.

The family is comforted by a quote read from an Irish headstone: “Death leaves a heartache no one can heal; love leaves a memory no one can steal.”

A private service for immediate family will be celebrated at a future date. As an expression of sympathy, a memorial has been established for those wishing to contribute: https://www.youcaring.com/anniepacylowski-1119715

Memorial messages will provide emotional support to John’s wife, Annie, and contributions will be applied to funeral and related expenses.

The family thanks everyone for their expressions of love and caring during this emotional time.
