Obituary for Freddie Lewis Smeltzer Jr.

Freddie Lewis Smeltzer, Jr., 65, of Inwood, passed away on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at the Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Born August 28, 1952 in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Freddie Lewis Smeltzer, Sr. and Sadie Virginia Snow Smeltzer.

He was a WVSSAC Official for Basketball and Football. He umpired Little League Softball and baseball in the Tri-State area. Freddie was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. He coached JV girls’ basketball at Musselman High School, 7th Grade girls Baseball in Harpers Ferry, Basketball and Soccer at West Nottingham Academy in Maryland and Football at Beckley Christian Academy in Beckley WV. He served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.

He is survived by one son, Kristopher Smeltzer and wife, Kandy; one grandson, Jordan Smeltzer, one granddaughter, Gini Lewis, all of Hedgesville; three brothers, Terry A. Smeltzer and wife, Debbie, of Martinsburg, Kevin D. Smeltzer and wife Debra, of Martinsburg, and Brett A. Smeltzer and wife, Kimberly, of Charles Town; one sister, Jennifer Lee Carpenter and husband, Todd, of Putman Co., WV; cousin, Doug Smeltzer and girlfriend, Joyce Penwell, of Martinsburg, friend, Nancy Smeltzer, of Gerrardstown; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his infant brother Curtis D. Smeltzer.

Memorial service Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Musselman High School Girls Softball.
