Obituary for Daniel Lee Householder

Daniel Lee Householder
Daniel Lee Householder, 58, of Martinsburg, WV, passed away on May 19, 2017 at home under hospice care with his family by his side. He was born on December 31, 1958, in Berkeley County, WV. He was the son of the late Edward Daniel Householder and Wanda Fay (DeHaven) Householder of Hedgesville.

Dan graduated from Berkeley Springs High School in 1977 and attended Shepherd College (now University). At Shepherd he met Arlene Strausser who became his wife October 4, 1980. While in high school and college, Dan interned at the local telephone company and turned it into a 38 year career as an installation and repair technician working for C & P, Bell Atlantic, Verizon, and Frontier Communications where he forged many lifelong friendships with coworkers and fellow CWA 2105 union members.

An outdoor enthusiast, Dan was a hiker, cyclist, runner, and kayaker who, with his friends and family, trekked the Appalachian Trail, Mt. Rainier, the New River, Dolly Sods, Canaan, and other numerous paths, trails and waterways. Also, an avid reader, he devoured non-fiction accounts of mountaineering and outdoor adventure. Dan loved the ocean, especially North Carolina’s Outer Banks, and was fond of visiting lighthouses with his wife Arlene. Together they photographed lighthouses from Maine to Georgia. A sports enthusiast, he was a faithful Baltimore Orioles fan. He had a great passion for music, which Dan enjoyed most while sitting on his deck, in front of a fire on chilly evenings. With a quick mind for recall, he and Arlene also frequented local trivia competitions. He especially enjoyed a fierce game of Uno or ping pong with family.

Dan is survived by his wife of 37 years, Arlene Denise Householder; son, Jacob Daniel Householder and wife Natalie, of Martinsburg; daughter, Sara Elizabeth Church and husband JD, of Martinsburg; and son, Matthew Ryan Householder, of Martinsburg. He is also survived by his mother Wanda Fay Householder; his sister Regina Lynne Sherman, husband Rodney, and nephew Ethan; and grandchildren Sedric Martinez, Rowan Householder, and Makenzie Householder.

A celebration of life gathering for family and friends will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Brown Funeral Home's South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood. Family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m., one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dan's name to the following organizations:

Appalachian Trail Conservancy, 799 Washington St., PO Box 807, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425

Dan will be remembered as a loving and devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and friend. The family encourages you to follow Dan’s lead by recycling, viewing a sunrise on the beach, holding your family close saying “I love you” often, and raising a glass to good friendships, great times, and lasting memories.
