Obituary for Phillip Max Coffey
Phillip Max Coffey, 90, of Shepherdstown, West Virginia passed away April
11, 2017 at Winchester Medical Center. He was born February 5, 1927 in
Spencer, Indiana, to the late Irma and Rex Coffey. Phil was also preceded
in death by his brother, Bernard Coffey; grandson, Kiel Sturm; and his first
wife, Betty Lancaster Pickett.
Phil grew up in Washington D.C. and graduated from Eastern High School.
He enlisted in the Navy during his Senior year and served in the South
Pacific Theater until the end of WWII. He attended Butler University and
graduated from American University on the GI Bill. He was recalled to the
Navy during the Korean Conflict. Phil became a Special Agent for the
Office of Naval Intelligence, and he retired after a long career with the
National Security Agency.
During his thirty-five years as a Jefferson County resident, he was involved
with many organizations. Phil was a member of the Shepherdstown Rotary
Club, and served on the Board of Trustees for Powhatan School in Boyce,
VA. He served on the Shepherdstown Water Board, Planning Commission,
and managed the construction of a renovation of the Entler Hotel for
Historic Shepherdstown in the nineties. As a long distance volunteer driver
for Good Shepherd Care Givers he logged over 80,000 miles driving
people to medical appointments.
Phil enjoyed traveling, gardening, golf, and spending time with friends and
family. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Elizabeth Trump Coffey, and
his three children, Laura Grafton and husband, Mark; Paula DeRitis and
husband, Eric; Matthew Coffey and wife, Michelle; seven grandchildren and
two great grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown
at 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2017.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to
Historic Shepherdstown or Good Shepherd Caregivers.
