Obituary for Evaristo Gonzalez "Gus" Gustines, Sr.

Evaristo “Gus” Gonzalez Gustines, Sr., 70 of Ranson, passed away Monday, October 24, 2016 in the Willow Tree Manor under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle following a long battle with Alzheimer’s, surrounded by his loving family. Born May 11, 1946 in Panama City, Panama he was the son of the late Daniel Gonzalez Rios and Irene Gustines Jimenez. Gus was brought up in the Catholic faith and later converted to Methodist when he joined the Oakland United Methodist Church. Gus came to the United States in 1963 and joined his brother Heliodoro in Miami. Both he and his brother were jockeys riding at tracks up and down the east coast, but he chose to live in Charles Town. After retiring from horse racing, he was a school bus driver for the Jefferson County Schools for 32 years. He is survived by his wife, Linda Jenkins Gustines, at home; three sons: Evaristo Gustines, Jr. and wife Trina and Daniel Gustines of Charles Town, Chaz Gustines and wife Lacey of Louisiana, four daughters, Juanita Gustines, Ursula Gorgas and husband John, Natalie Slazer and husband Jesse and Pamela Gustines, one step daughter; Michelle Mumford Oden, all of Charles Town, three brothers, Heliodoro “Papito” Gustines of Bayside, New York, David and Daniel Gustines, two sisters, Emilee G.De. Stagnaro and Jasmina Rios all of Panama City, Panama, fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, special niece, Roselita and nephew Jose Luis. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers. Gus will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and his great love for people. He never met a stranger and had so much compassion for anyone in need. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 31, 2016 at the Jefferson Chapel with the Reverend Joanne Alexander and Reverend Kent Tice officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be privately held at a later date.
