Obituary for Mary Jane "Jane" Murphy (Haas)

Mary Jane (Jane) Murphy, 93, of Martinsburg, WV, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 23, 2016 at the Hospice of the Panhandle in Kearneysville, WV.

Jane was born May 20, 1923, in Martinsburg and was the daughter of Joseph and Caroline (Carrie) Haas.

She was a graduate of Saint Joseph's Catholic High School Class of 1940. During World War II she contributed to the war effort by working on the assembly line at Fairchild in Hagerstown, MD.

On June 19, 2008, Jane married Tom L. Gasper of Martinsburg in Saint Joseph's Catholic Church surrounded by friends and family. She spent seven wonderful years with Tom and his loving family, including Diane Parkinson and husband Nelson, George Gasper and wife Ruth, Patricia Rodgers and her husband Larry, Joe Gasper and wife Crystal and Tim Gasper and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by: four sons - Maurice (Mike) O. Murphy, Martinsburg; James S. Murphy and wife Jeanne, Jane Lew, WV; Donald (Don) E. Murphy and wife Lisa, Houston, TX; Louis E. Murphy, Houston, TX; two daughters - Joanne Murphy Kozier and husband, Mike, Deep Creek Lake, MD and Sharon K. Murphy, Kensington, MD; seven grandchildren - Annathea, Elyse, Brenton, Breauna, Aiden, Christopher and Michael; and seven great-grandchildren - Ben, Eli, Carson, Hattie, Taylor, Cohen and Liam; two sisters - Joan Cook and Ann Catlett both of Martinsburg; one brother-in-law Father Louis E. Murphy, Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity, Silver Spring, MD; special friends of the family Arlene Antonicelli and Bruce Arnold; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Maurice O. Murphy whom she married July 1, 1944 and her son Brian P. Murphy, her brother William (Bill) Haas and sister Betty Grimes.

Always a loving and fun loving, hard working mother and wife, Jane also devoted countless hours as a volunteer, especially with Catholic Daughters of America where she worked on many committees and lead held various offices. She delivered Meals on Wheels over two decades until she was in her eighties. A wonderful cook and baker, she contributed to many bake sales and funeral lunches where her Harvard beets were legendary. Her strong faith anchored her life, and she quietly influenced others through her Small Faith Group and friendly manner.

Friends and family will be received from 6PM to 8PM on Monday, September 26, 2016, at Brown Funeral Home, 327 West King Street, Martinsburg, WV. A funeral mass and celebration of Jane's life will be conducted at 10 AM on Tuesday, September 27, 2016, at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, 225 S. Queen Street, Martinsburg, WV. Burial to follow at Rosedale Cemetery.

The Church and family also invite guests back to the church for a luncheon after the burial. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent in Jane's name to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV, 25430 or Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity, 9001 New Hampshire Avenue NE, Silver Spring, MD 20903.
