Obituary for Dr. Clifford "Doc" Sperow II

Dr. Clifford Sperow, II M.D., born October 9, 1924, died peacefully at his beloved Sunny Ridge Farm surrounded by his family on Thursday, September, 17, 2015. Born in Martinsburg he was the son of Dr. Clifford and Ercel Sperow who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Williams Sperow, daughter Michelle (Missy) Sperow Sharp, daughter Jacqueline Blake Sperow Jacobs and Donald Charles Jones, daughter Mary Hunter Sperow Bartzen and her husband Tut Bartzen, Jr. and his precious granddaughter Sara Hyde Bartzen.

After losing his father at a young age, Doc was inspired to follow in his footsteps. He graduated from Martinsburg High School and Washington & Lee University, served in the military as a First Lieutenant in the Army prior to graduating and completing his training at The Medical College of Virginia. He returned to Martinsburg where he was an Orthopedic Surgeon for over 40 years. He spent his career on call every night, never tiring of this responsibility and was considered a visionary in his field. He served proudly as the team physician for Martinsburg High School, Musselman High School and Shepherd College. In 1992 he was recognized for his contributions to Shepherd College by being inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. This recognition was a tremendous source of pride and joy for him.

Doc was a generous, passionate, talented Surgeon and a compassionate and bright man. He adored many other special people; including dedicated nurses, patients who loved and respected him, and many friends he met through his journey in life. He was an expert astronomer, an avid golfer, and lifelong sports enthusiast. He had a passion for Thoroughbreds, owning and racing them much of his life. His generosity and love of animals was a shared passion with his wife Pat, giving a permanent home to any animal in need; including dozens of cats, dogs, baby deer and various “wildlife rescues.” He adored his three daughters, working tirelessly to give them every opportunity in life. He found incredible joy spending time with his only grandchild, Sara who felt the depth of his affection every time she came through the door.

A service to celebrate his long wonderful life will be held at 10 AM Monday, Sept. 21 2015 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Martinsburg, WV.

In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to Shepherd College Athletics or to the Hospice of the Eastern Panhandle.
