Obituary for Walter "Bud" Hersh

Walter “Bud” Hersh, 68, of Martinsburg, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 31, 2015 very peacefully at home.

Born November 5, 1947 in Meyersdale, Pa., he was the son of the late “Bill” Hersh and Caroline Butler.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Bonnie Hersh, two sons Brett Hersh and wife Betty Jo Hersh of Falling Waters, WV and Brian Hersh and wife Monika Foster of Hedgesville, WV; four sisters, 2 brothers; 7 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandson.

Bud’s legacy is one of focus and determination. He started working when he was twelve years old and, while attending high school, was a crew foreman for his employer’s construction company in Meyersdale. After graduation, he married his sweetheart Mary “Bonnie” McCullough and they had two children, Brett and Brian. Bud worked fulltime at night for the B&O Railroad as a Telegraph Operator while also attending Potomac State and, later, Shepherd College as a fulltime student. He graduated from Shepherd as Summa Cum Laude’ and McMurran Scholar. He was the first in his family to graduate college and later became a CPA.

Bud’s professional life was centered on aerospace production. In 1975 he was hired by Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown Md. where he became a senior cost estimator. Here, his primary focus was the production of the Fairchild A10 close support aircraft, affectionately known as the tank-busting Warthog by all who fly her. His calculations on the cost of wing production were used throughout the company.

Bud held a variety of senior management positions during his career including Senior Vice President of Programs for the Boeing 757, Director of Finance for Fairchild Industries, and a Quality Control Manager of commercial aerospace engines for Rohr Industries. He was also an early adopter of Lean Management production techniques and developed, trained, and consulted with United States suppliers of Goodrich Landing Gear across the United States.

Bud attended Crossroads Community Church and Rivers Edge Ministries in Martinsburg. He was an elder, financial adviser, Bible Study Leader and inspiration to many. He loved his God and his church.

Bud was an example of quiet leadership and humility who taught his children and family to question their circumstances and to rise above them. He also taught them to accept God’s will with a thankful heart. The family would like to thank his caregivers, Carla, John, Donna, Brian, Mandy and Darren who provided love and support during Bud’s prolonged illness.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 2nd at Brown Funeral Home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the funeral home.
