Obituary for Velma Frances Baker-Hanlin
Velma Frances Baker-Hanlin, 84, of Martinsburg, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at Canterbury Center, Shepherdstown.
Born December 23, 1930 in Romney, WV she was the daughter of the late Edward Baker and Leila D. Haines-Baker.
Mrs. Hanlin had been hospitalized and in a rehab/nursing facility since early May where she passed, due to health complications.
She married W.D. (Del) Hanlin in 1954, and had a son, Craig in 1961. She received numerous degrees (and honors) from attending Shepherd College, University of West Virginia, University of Maryland, and a few others.
She was well-known as an educator/school teacher in the Washington County, MD school system where she taught for many years and was highly admired. She was one of the early pioneers of the Head-Start System in the 1960’s and continued to teach in the younger-early grades where she retired in the early 1990’s.
Mrs. Hanlin was involved in various activities and was loved and well-known in this region by many, as an artist, with numerous paintings to her credit. She was also a master gardener and was involved with women’s clubs and the Red Hatters, to name a few. She performed volunteer work, helping with numerous charitable and church organizations; she was a member and in the church choir at Trinity United Methodist Church in Martinsburg.
She is survived by her husband, her son, her sister, various nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, July 5, 2015 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at the Brown Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 6 at 11:00AM at Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Ken Walker officiating. Graveside service will be on Monday at 2:30PM in Ebenezer Church Cemetery in Romney.
