Obituary for John Francis Hoover

John Francis Hoover, 76, of Martinsburg, passed away May 7, 2015, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on November 1, 1938, he was the son of the late Paul & Frances Hoover, and the brother of Earl Hoover, of Jacksonville, FL.

John spent much of his life in the political arena which he enjoyed immensely. He retired from the State of West Virginia as a supervisor for the Department of Highways after more than 25 years of service. In addition, he also served as a liaison to Governor Jay Rockefeller. He was a state delegate to the Democratic National Convention for President Jimmy Carter.

A man of many abilities, John also worked as a sales representative for Wagner Chevrolet-Olds, was the president and owner of Fine Distributors, the Administrative Assistant to the West Virginia Legislature in Charleston, WV, a Police Officer with the Capitol Hill Police Department in Washington, DC and an Air Policeman with the 167th West Virginia Air National Guard.

John was community service-minded throughout his life. He was a member of the WV State Building Commission, the Berkeley County Chamber of Commerce, President of the Opequon Lions Club, on the Board of Directors of the Martinsburg Jaycees, former board member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and coach for little league football and baseball in Berkeley County.

He was a graduate of Martinsburg High School and attended Shepherd College.

John is survived and dearly missed by his wife of 38 years, Jean Hoover, and their children and families: Kitty and husband Arthur Willison of Cumberland, MD, Diane and husband Lou Brady of Sykesville, MD, Dr. Tim Tyler and wife Lynn of Angola, IN and Annette Scheidecker of Longmeadow, MA. John also leaves behind nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and wonderful family members from the Bittorie and Yurish families, and many dear friends.

Family will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home from 6-8pm on Monday, May 11, 2015.

Funeral service will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Brown Funeral Home.

Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery.
