Obituary for Joseph Edward Meier Sr.

Joseph Edward Meier, Sr., 83, of Martinsburg, passed away on Monday, Decmeber 1, 2014 at the VA Medical Center.

Born on December 3, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Celesntin and Margaret Hancock Meier.

He was of the Catholic faith.

He was a retired Staff Sgt. with the US Army, where he served with the 2nd Infantry for 24 years. He had been held as a Prisoner of War in the Korean War and in Vietnam. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts, and The Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a Green Beret, Army Ranger, and a Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne.

He is survived by his wife, Deanna Elizabeth Scadden Meier; two sons, Joseph E. Meier, Jr. and Robert Meier.; two daughters, Susanne Landaverda and Debra Abrahams all of Chambersburg, PA; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one step-son, Matthew L. Poling, Hagerstown, MD; and one step-daughter, Lori Poling, Las Vegas, NV.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert V. Meier, Sr. and Paul Meier

Family will receive friends on Saturday, December 6, 2014 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at the Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood.

Interment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
